38.1 REST API Fundamentals & The HTTP Protocol in Excel

Modern enterprise data sirf local files me nahi hota; woh cloud CRM systems, ERPs, live market feeds aur web databases me store hota hai. REST APIs (Representational State Transfer) standard HTTP protocols ke through Excel ko live cloud data ke sath dynamically connect karte hain.

1. The REST Architecture Framework

[ Excel VBA Client ]  ====( HTTP Request: Method + URL + Headers )====>  [ Cloud REST Server ]
                      <====( HTTP Response: Status Code + JSON Body )==

Core Concepts:

Endpoint URL: Resource ka unique web address (e.g. https://api.company.com/v1/products).
Statelessness: Har request independent hoti hai; server client ke previous sessions par rely nahi karta. Client ko authentication credentials har request me provide karne hote hain.

2. The 5 Core HTTP Verbs

HTTP Method	CRUD Mapping	Primary Operation	Real-World Use Case
`GET`	Read	Retrieve data without modifying server state	Fetch active product catalog or currency rates
`POST`	Create	Submit new data to create a resource	Create a new sales order or customer
`PUT`	Update	Complete replacement of target resource	Overwrite an existing customer profile
`PATCH`	Update	Partial update of specific fields	Update only the stock quantity or price
`⌫Bksp`	Delete	Remove specified resource	Cancel an invoice or deactivate a product

3. HTTP Status Code Classifications

Server response header me 3-digit status code return karta hai jo request ka outcome batata hai:

2xx: Success       -> 200 OK, 201 Created, 204 No Content
4xx: Client Errors -> 400 Bad Request, 401 Unauthorized, 403 Forbidden, 404 Not Found, 429 Rate Limit
5xx: Server Errors -> 500 Internal Error, 502 Bad Gateway, 503 Service Unavailable, 504 Timeout

If http.Status >= 200 And http.Status < 300 Then
    Debug.Print "Request Succeeded: " & http.Status
Else
    Debug.Print "Request Failed: " & http.Status & " - " & http.StatusText
End If

Exercise

Exercise 1: Basic SUM Addition

Calculate total revenue in cell D6 by summing all items in column D (cells D2 to D5).

Every formula you enter is evaluated by a real spreadsheet engine in your browser — results are not pre-computed.

Exercise 1: Basic SUM Addition practice sheet
#	A	B	C	D
1	Product	Quantity	Unit Price	Total
2	Laptop	5	45000	225000
3	Mouse	20	500	10000
4	Keyboard	15	1200	18000
5	Monitor	8	12500	100000
6	Grand Total
